Seasons Greetings all of my friends! Tonight is Christmas Eve, and I truly hope where ever you are and whoever you are with are having a meaningful time relishing in the true Spirit of this holiday! Not lamenting about absence from big parties, big presents and all the holiday hype the media insists we MUST have in order to have that “Holly Jolly Christmas!” It’s just not about that madness!
Christians worldwide celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ today (or tomorrow), not the Macy’s parade, or how much we have spent or how much has been spent on us. It’s not about who we are “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” with either, although many of us feel incomplete without that romantic element of Christmas, but really, whose party is this anyway??? It certainly seems that society has broken like a Christmas tree ornament falling to the floor when it comes to appreciating what we are celebrating every year.
Even atheists have cashed in on this holiday! Festivus. What the heck is “Festivus?” Christmas without Christ I suppose, but why bother? SALES! SALES! SALES!!! “Get those lights up!” What will Uncle Herbert want this year? Personally, I DO want a hippopotamus for Christmas, but I know I can’t have one. Further, I have down-sized my Christmas tremendously. I stopped buying into the hype and hysteria long ago. I like it simple, reflective and celebratory of God’s promise to us in sending us His Son to offer US SALVATION! Imagine THAT?! If you CAN, you are most likely viewed as a misguided moron in today’s world! A mere believer in “fairy tales!” Is that what Christians who keep Christ in Christmas are? Fairy tale believers?
I have a very hard time believing that! Why? There is nothing quite like that feeling that comes with seeing Christ’s work being done in the world today, albeit less and less, it does occur! That warming of the heart and feeding of the soul that brings a tear of joy to the eye when goodness prevails! That feeling cannot be bought at any department store, wrapped in any fancy paper or transpire by anyone’s elaborate Christmas lights blinking all over their home! In fact, that is the furthest from where it truly comes from! However, if Uncle Herbert smiles when he opens the obligatory tie he gets every single year, that may constitute it because TRADITION is a strong stone that holds up the structure of family, belief and love. Alas, we see less and less of that as the years go passing by as well….
While on the topic of TRADITION, what happened to the Christmas music we are “fed” from the mainstream media these days? We hear less and less of the word “CHRISTMAS” and more secular “Seasons Greetings.” Why? Why has it become “insulting” to say MERRY CHRISTMAS?! Oh, because you don’t celebrate Christmas?? Then don’t! But why do you expect those of us who DO to feel awkward and stupid for saying it? Is “Happy Festivus” any less insulting? The ironic thing is that the Christians who are held responsible to not insult anyone are exactly the ones that ARE being insulted! It’s CHRISTMAS for goodness sake! If you don’t like or celebrate it, just ignore us “Fairy Tale” believers, PLEASE! We are harmless!
I truly hope and pray whatever holiday you take part in at this time of year is a happy, healthy and reflective one! Enjoy whatever it is you do and have a great New Year as well! (Is that okay to say?) Happy Birthday Jesus! Thank You for your gift to us all, eternal life! Be kind to each other, be kind to yourselves and “May Your Days Be Merry and Bright!” (I will exclude the next line purposely, although you know what I mean!
